Nokia Music Service is coming to Windows 8 and Windows RT

There is a good news for Nokia mobile phone users. The Finnish-based smartphone maker has announced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) that its Nokia Music service is now going to be available for Microsoft’s Windows 8 and Windows RT platform.

This music mix service was debuted for Windows Phone 7 and is pre-loaded in the company’s Lumia line of smartphones. It will be introduced in Windows 8 and Windows RT.

Even Nokia phone users will get this app in Microsoft’s official app store though it is not available yet. However, Nokia did not disclose the date when it will be coming to Windows 8 and Windows RT OS.

Users will not have to spend any single penny for downloading the app but they will have to pay U.S. $399 per month for subscription service. It has similarity with Nokia Music+ subscription service.

Music+ lets users skip the song and stream music at a much higher quality.  

Nokia launches three Symbian-based smartphones Nokia 600, 700 and 701

On September 29, 2011, the world’s leading mobile phone provider, Nokia, officially announced the launch of its three latest Symbian-based smartphones in India. These new models are- Nokia 600, 700 and 701.

These three handsets have come with attractive price points and the inclusion of the latest version of Symbian OS, Symbian Belle. These smartphones were first showcased in Hong Kong last month. It seems that the company is very much interested to present them in more countries.

The Nokia 700 model has come with a 3.2-inch Clear Back Amoled display. It also has Gorilla Glass to protect the screen from scratches and damage. It includes other feathers including a pentaband radio with 3G connectivity, 1 GHz processor, Bluetooth, WiFi, digital compass, onboard GPS sensor, a 5-mp camera with LED flash.

One of the most important features is that it comes with a built in Near Field Communication (NFC) chip. It is said that the phone’s body will be completely made of recycled materials. It will be priced at Rs. 18,099.

Rumor has it that Nokia 701 is now already available to buy in India. It has a 3.5-inch In Plane Switching LCD display with Clear Back technology. The main attraction of this handset will be its graphics processor which is said to be four times the graphics memory in comparison to older Symbian handsets.

It will also feature a 1 GHz processor to give the best performance for Symbian Belle. Users will get a dual-camera in this handset. In its rear, it has an 8 mp camera with dual LED flash. Its front facing VGA camera supports video calling and it also has an in built Near Field Communications chip. It includes an 8GB memory which can be expanded via using micro SD memory card. It will be priced at Rs. 18,999.

There is hardly any information about Nokia 600. It is said that users will be given good quality sound system. It will be Nokia’s loudest at 106 phones. It will also come with a built-in FM radio antenna for listening to radio without headphones and FM transmitter that makes it possible to broadcast music from your phone to any FM radio. It will be priced at Rs. 12,999.

Nokia India introduces E6 and X7 smartphone

With the aim of increasing the sale of smartphone in India, the Finnish company, Nokia, has showcased two new mobile phones- E6 and X7. These two models have been produced targeting business executives and entertainment devotees respectively.

Nokia E6 will be priced at Rs.18,679, while buyers will have to cost Rs.22,829 for X7 model.

These two smartphones come with Symbian Anna operating system. It is the latest update of the Symbian software which will give users greater experience. This latest update comes with new icons and usability enhancements such as improved text input, faster browser, refreshed Ovi Maps and higher security.

Nokia India Marketing Director, Viral Oza, told journalists that the launch of two new devices would help Nokia strong its position in the Indian smartphone market.

Nokia has been struggling hard in the mobile phone market due to the increasing popularity of smartphone. They are continuously losing their market share to other companies. It is thought that their two new models will help them to regain their lost share.

Mr. Oza also said that Nokia would start shipping other phones like N8s, E7s, C7s and C6-01s with the new Symbian Anna software update next month.

Nokia Targets Selling Half Billion Mobile Phones in 2010

Now, majority of people on earth (excluding children) perhaps have a mobile phone set. However, there is still room for growth in Asia and that is why, I am not surprised to see the target of selling 500 million mobile phone sets in 2010 in the whole world. There is still a lot of room for growth in Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia and Pakistan. All of these countries are in Asia. I think that Nokia is the market leader in these countries. The company has market share of nearly 40% worldwide.  

Rick Simonson of Nokia recently stated this goal. He said, "There is definitely not enough room for more than 4-5 operating systems. Scale is critical. For instance, Palm's OS is very good, but with less than 1 percent of the global volumes, it won't be too appealing to developers."

Recently, Rick Simonson gave an interview to Economic Times and there he said it. He is Nokia's mobile phone unit chief.

Nokia is falling behind smart phone segment but it is doing very well in the concept phone segment. I personally think that Nokia will be able to meet its target and sell nearly half million handsets this season. 

Nokia India to Emerge as Solution Provider

Nokia is the market leader of Indian mobile phone industry and now it seems that Finish mobile phone maker is going to emerge as a solution provider in the large mobile phone market. Having seen an extensive growth and opportunity in Indian mobile phone market, Nokia India now wants to focus on offering solutions in several areas including information, entertainment, communication and commercial etc.

Recent, Nokia India held a one-day media conference where Nokia India’s Vice-President and Managing Director, D. Shivakumar, said that alongside leading the mobile phone market in India, Nokia is also keen to become a leading solution provider in the country. Nokia is also going to offer a number of services for the mobile phone users including messaging services, Nokia music store, gaming services and other location based services for the Nokia users. Using the messaging services, Nokia users can have full access to their e-mail accounts. Moreover, Nokia phone users can also download songs from a music store which is yet to be launched in India.

While addressing the media, Vineet Taneja, the director of marketing in Nokia India, said that their main objective was to connect to the people which was important to them. Nokia has a strong presence in South Asian market including ever-increasing Indian mobile phone market. Now that, they are also interested to prime solution provider in this large market, it seems that Nokia just wants to strengthen its presence in India.

Nokia: Bad forecast for Mobile Phone Demand

The ongoing global economic recession is affecting every sector. Just think of the continual reduction in oil price in the international market. $55.00 is now the current on a price and there is strong possibility that it can even go lower. So, I’m not surprised to see that Nokia has stated that there would be a decrease in demand of mobile phone in the fourth quarter. But the only reason for the slowdown of the month of mobile phone is the global economic recession and there are very few chances that this economic conditions will improve in the short term.

Nokia says global demand for mobile phones would be lower in the fourth quarter than previously forecast because of the international economic slowdown, according to reports Friday from Helsinki.

Nokia, the world's largest cell phone maker, estimated mobile phone volumes in the fourth quarter would be approximately 330 million, lower than its previous forecast.

This is a surely bad news for mobile phone makers but I think that there is still a lot tougher room for growth in the mobile phones sector because most people in Asia and Africa still do not own a mobile phone set. But the good thing is that most people do not consider mobile phone a luxury item anymore for desktop. Rather, they feel that it is a part of everyday necessity and an integral part of communication in human lives in our time.

Nokia-Navteq merger gets green light from Europe's competition authority

On Wednesday, Finland mobile phone giant, Nokia, received green light from Europe’s competition authority to acquire Navteq, a US-based digital map producer. The deal is worth $12.1 billion. Two months ago, Tom Tom, the largest car navigation device producer, took over Tele Atlas, another digital map database provider. The took over cost Tom Tom €2.9bn. Chicago Tribune reports:

The case is the second acquisition of a digital map company to receive EU clearance this year. The commission approved plans by TomTom, Europe's biggest maker of car-navigation devices, to buy Tele Atlas NV on May 14.

"Navteq will play a key role in our Internet services strategy," Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, Nokia's president and chief executive, said in a statement.

The European competition authority concluded that Navteq-Nokia merger would not have any negative impact in Europe. Because of Tele Atlas, Navteq-Noqia merger would not gain monopoly over map database industry in Europe. Nokia-Navteq would not shut down supply of such databases to competitors because the loss made in sales of maps can not be offset by sales of mobile phones.

The future of Symbian

Nokia, the Finland mobile giant, has bought Symbian, the most popular smartphone software. Earlier, it was 48% stake holder in Symbian, now it has bought the remaining shares with $410 million. Now, Nokia is planning to make Symbian open source. Currently, companies using Symbian are paying $4 per phone. After Symbian becomes open source there be no charges. Information Week reports:

For businesses, the move raises several critical issues. On the upside, it's possible companies will wind up with cheaper phones--the Symbian OS today costs manufacturers about $4, while Microsoft charges about $15 for Windows Mobile per phone. A free mobile OS could ramp up price competition. On the downside, IT departments could face a tougher battle trying to contain the number of smartphone platforms they're asked to support, if open source leads to more variations of the Symbian OS.

Currently, 67% of the total smartphones produced around the world use Symbian. However, Symbian is not widely used in lower-end phones. In the USA, Microsoft, Apple, and RIM are dominating the scene. If Symbian wants to win this war of mobile operating system then it would have to be rapidly developed because smartphone makers are exploring all the possible ways to include more functions in their little gadgets. Truly, Nokia has put great pressure on Microsoft, Google and other mobile phone operating system producers but to win the battle it has to be very much innovative with Symbian.

Nokia is buying Symbian shares and making Symbian free for all

Recently, Finland mobile giant, Nokia, bought out its fellow shareholders in Symbian, the UK based handset Software Company. Nokia is now also making Symbian loyalty free. Market analysts believe that Nokia is doing it to outsmart its rivals and this is going to seriously hurt Microsoft, Google and other major mobile software producers. Currently, Symbian is used in two-thirds of the total smart phone handsets with computer like capabilities around the world and 6% of the total mobile phones around the world. Other major mobile softwares are: Android from Google; Apple’s iPhone, Windows Mobile from Microsoft; and BlackBerry of RIM. Telegraph.co.uk reports:

Nokia was quick yesterday to dismiss the idea that its moves were simply a reaction to its rivals. "This is a market-making move and looking at it as a response to anything would not do justice to what we are doing," said Kai Oistamo, executive vice-president of Nokia.

But analysts were in little doubt. "This move's a shrewd response to growing threats from other providers of mobile phone software," said Geoff Blaber of industry watchers CCS Insight.

Mr Blaber made particular reference to the "open-source" LiMo Foundation as well as Google's Android, which also promises to offer handset makers an operating system at virtually zero cost.

Nokia is also launching Symbian Foundation, a non-profit organization that will unite the Symbian with three user interfaces.

Currently, Windows Mobile from Microsoft is controlling 13% of the smart phone market. Microsoft charges from $8-$15 per phone from the handset makers and Symbian charges $4.10. As Nokia is going to make Symbian free for all, according to Carolina Milanesi, a Gartner analyst, this puts a lot of pressure on Microsoft as they are trying to make their place in the mobile phone market.

Despite world wide economic slow down, South Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (SEO: 005930) is expecting to sale 200 million mobile phone sets this year. Compared to 2007, this is a 25% increase.

Youngcho Chi, Senior Vice President for Marketing, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. said that his company had not been affected by the current economic climate. They were still seeing health growth rates in their sales. He believed that global economic situation presented them with the opportunity to increase their competitive edge to win their consumers’ support and attention. Reuters reports:

"We expect the overall mobile market size in 2008 to be about 1.2 billion units, a 9 per cent increase from 2007," Youngcho Chi, Senior Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Mobile Communications division, told Reuters in an email.

"Of these, we aim to achieve sales of 200 million units, a 25 per cent increase from the 161 million units sold in 2007," Chi said.

Samsung, which trails Finland's Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research) in the cellphone market, sold 46.3 million phones in the first quarter, equal to a record number sold in the fourth quarter.

Margins in the unit rose to a strong 16 percent from the fourth quarter's 11 percent.

According to Samsung forecasts, the mobile handset market would grow 4-5% in the second quarter against previous quarter in which the company sold about 46.3 mobile phones. Last year, Samsung observed a 42% growth in its phone set sales, which was four times higher than the industry growth rate. Still, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd is far behind Nokia (NYSE:NOK), the Finland mobile phone company in terms of global handset sales.

Nokia E66 and NokiaE71: Two new E-series phones for corporate users

Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia, has launched two new E-series phones. First launched in December 2007 and sold more than 10 million around the world, the E-series phones are email-optimized devices created to compete with products like RIM’s (TSE:RIM) BlackBerry phones. They are developed for corporate people.

Meet Nokia E66 and Nokia E71, the latest members of Nokia’s E-family. According Leif-Olof Wallin, analyst, Gartner, Inc. (NYSE:IT), said that Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 are the comeback phones of Nokia in the corporate arena. Nokia E51, the last E family phone, was launched nine months ago. LG and Samsung are worried about Nokia's price cut rumor

Rumor came out that, in order to get better position in the South Korean mobile phone market, Nokia is going to lower the price of its products. The news has irked LG and Samsung two of the top mobile phone producers of South Korea. With its lower priced mobile phone sets Finnish mobile giant, Nokia, is planning to acquire 20% of the South Korean mobile phone market. Phones Review reports:

LG told Reuters that they are “carefully watching” Espoo and will be keeping an eye on their tactical moves over the coming months. LG will also counter with “product portfolio” and “marketing strength.”

Nam Yong, chairman and CEO of LG Electronics has told reporters that unless it could turn out products which “differentiated” themselves from Nokia then price competition was “inevitable.”

To counter Nokia’s price cut, Yong said that LG would go on creating competitive products rather than going for “cheap prices.” Mr. Yong also said that his company will continue targeting the premium market and will movie into the low end market when it would feel that it has built its presence.

Nokia will use Linux in a handset that works as a mobile phone under WiMAX network.

Will or will not Nokia use Linux in its mobile phones? Most of the news reports including Reuters said that it will, but the Finnish mobile giant refuted those claims. Currently, Nokia is using Linux Operating system in its 810 Internet Tablet. Other major mobile phone companies like Vodafone, Motorola, NTTDoCoMo, Huawei and LG are also moving towards using Linux based softwares. The speculation about Linux started after Nokia’s Financial Director, Rick Simonson said that his company was well on the way towards using Linux on its mobile phone products. It further prompted a speculation about a tie-up with Google. The Register reports:

Except, says Nokia, it has no such plan. The confusion comes from the definition of a mobile phone, and what constitutes a phone handset. Nokia already uses Linux on its internet tablet class of devices, exemplified by the Nokia N810, and is planning to expand that class into more feature-rich devices.

The N810 already features VoIP, including a Skype client, but so far those have only been usable when logged on to a Wi-Fi hotspot. But in the US Nokia has announced and demonstrated a version of the N810 with WiMAX support, which will give it the always-on connectivity that traditionally defines a mobile phone.

So here is a handset, from Nokia, which can make and receive calls as long as it remains within a WiMAX network which is intended to be ubiquitous, eventually. So can one say Nokia are planning to release mobile phones based on Linux?

I am not a mobile phone savvy person but when you can use a machine to receive and send calls then I think we should refer it as a phone. So, in the end, it looks like that Nokia is going to use Linux in its phone set.

Nokia to save the Indian tiger from extinction

In order to save the Indian tiger, Finnish mobile phone company, Nokia has declared to join with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) India. Techtree.com reports:

Enunciating on the partnership, heads of both organizations expressed concern over the declining tiger population in the country, and elaborated on the role the partnership could play in curbing this decline.

The tiger conservation project will address issues such as alternative livelihood for local communities, environmental awareness, and communication. It will also address critical issues that face the Southwestern Ghats today, including the loss of bio-diversity and the conflict between human beings and wildlife. Nokia and the World Wildlife Fund India will work towards providing education and alternative livelihood programs to villages around tiger reserves and National Protected Areas such as Ranthambore in Rajasthan.

The population around the world is increasing and to meet the growing demands of this population every day hundreds of acres of forests are destroyed. India being one of the densely populated countries in the world is suffering from serious deforestation problems. Because of deforestation, the tigers are losing their natural habitat. In addition, illegal poaching is claiming lives of many wild animals including the tiger. Now is the time to do something or else we will lose many such beautiful animals.

According to the report of NPD Group, a top market research firm, music-enabled phones made up 60% of the mobile phones sold in the USA in the first quarter. With the new Nokia 5310 Xpress Music phone, Nokia is trying to gain a better position in the USA market. Currently, it is in the fourth position in North America. The new model was unveiled at the T-Mobile USA show last Tuesday. The first and only wireless operator in the USA, T-Mobile USA, Inc. will sell the Nokia 5310 Xpress Music phone. The company also sold its predecessor 5610 Xpress Music phone. Both the models were announced last August by Nokia. The Nokia 5310 Xpress Music handset is coming to all the T-Mobile stores in USA on May 28. Now let’s look at the phone:
