The much awaited AFC Asian Cup is going to start from 7th January 2011 and it will continue till 29th January 2011. This time Qatar will host the prestigious tournament in five different venues.
AFC Asian Cup 2011 is going to be the fifteenth edition of the tournament since 1956. It is the second time that Qatar is going to host the tournament. In 1988, they hosted the AFC Asian Cup for the first time.
Since 1956, the AFC Asian Cup is taking place every four years. Until now, only seven countries have won the title while four countries could manage their runners-up place.
Saudi Arabia, Japan and Iran are three countries who have won the title highest times. They have won the title three times each. On the other hand, South Korea won the title twice while both Kuwait and Israel won the title one apiece.
Since 2004, sixteen countries are taking part in the Asian Cup divided into four groups. Four teams have been qualified automatically. As a host country Qatar has received automatic byes to Finals. The other teams are Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea who finished the 2007 AFC Asian Cup respectively first, second and third.
Ten countries have been qualified through a traditional preliminary round with five teams in each ground sending one winner and one runner-up to the tournament. Two other teams have been qualified through AFC Challenge Cup competitions in 2008 and 2010. India won the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup competition and North Korea won the 2010 AFC Challenge Cup competition and qualified automatically to the 2011 AFC Asian Cup Finals.
It is going to be the most attractive tournament ever. The new edition of AFC Asian Cup will catch the attention of many football fans worldwide. Many players such as Tim Cahill, Shinji Kagawa and Park Ji Sung, who are currently playing in well-known European clubs, will be seen participating in this tournament.
On 23rd April 2010, the draw for the AFC Asian Cup 2011 was held in Doha, Qatar. Qatar has been placed in one of the strongest groups.

Sixteen players have been divided into four groups each group consisting of four teams. The groups are given below-
Group A- China, Kuwait, Qatar, Uzbekistan.
Group B- Japan, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria.
Group C- Australia, Bahrain, India, South Korea.
Group D- Iran, Iraq, North Korea. United Arab Emirates.
