Indian qualified themselves in the AFC Asian Cup Finals after winning the AFC Challenge Cup in 2008. India will get the taste of playing this sub continental tournament for the first time in over 25 years. For a long time, this South Asian country could not able to qualify for the tournament. They last played in the tournament in 1984.

For the second time, Australia is going to play in the Asian Cup. They made their first appearance in the 2007 Asian Cup as the first non-host nation to qualify for the tournament. However, Australia could move to quarter-final round. In the quarter-final round, they lost to Japan in a penalty shootout.

Both India and Australia will be eyeing to make a winning start with the opening match that will be played on Monday. No doubt, it will be a tough task for both of them. Australia looks strong favorite to win the title. They will get some inspiration for their good performance in the 2006 World Cup and for their top class talent.

India will have to face Australia without their key player, Sushil Kumar, who has been suspended for two matches by the AFC Disciplinary Committee for elbowing an opponent during their 2010 AFC Challenge Cup match against DPR Korea. The AFC Disciplinary Committee informed it to the media in the morning.

Because of his suspension, Sushil Kumar cannot play first two games against Australia and Bahrain in the AFC Asian Cup 2011 in Qatar.

The absence of Sushil Kumar for the first two matches will put India under huge threat. Now, Indian coach will have to find someone who can successfully replace him in the squad. It is heard that Mohammed Rafi would draft into the squad while Sushil Kumar is left out.

Indian coach, Bob Houghton, may be feeling much pressure for the opening match. However, Bob has two other strikers- Sunil Chhetri and Abhishek Yadav, but captain, Baichung Bhutia, is doubtful for the ongoing tournament. Coach hopes that Baichung will be make his return before South Korea match.

The injury news of Indian captain, Baichung Bhutia, has come as a big shock. News came out that he is almost certain to miss the Asian Cup due to lingering calf injury. Baichung, whom I. M. Vijayan described as "God's gift to Indian football, has been carrying the injury for a while now. He will be replaced by Mohammed Rafi in the 23 member squad.

It will be the first ever meeting for both India and Australia in the AFC Asian Cup. Outside of this tournament, these two teams have met each other 11 times so far where India won six matches and Australia got victory in four matches while one match ended in a draw.

They are going to meet each other almost 41 years after as they last met each other in 1970 in the group stage of the Merdeka Cup in Kuala Lumpur which India won by 2-0.

No doubt, fans can see a tough game between India and Australia as both of them will try their best to win the opening match. There is hardly any possibility for team India to win the match against Australia.

Do you think India can win the opening match?
