Bangladesh
has taken 1-0 lead of the three-match ODI series after beating India by 79 runs
in their opening match played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
It was their fourth victory against India and ninth straight win at home. It
became possible because of Mustafizur Rahman’s performance with the ball.
The
nineteen-year-old left-hand fast bowler Mustafizur became the second Bangladeshi
bowler after Taskin Ahmed to claim a five-wicket haul on debut. He took five
wickets for 50 in 9.2 overs. Taskin Ahmed and Shakib Al Hasan took two wickets
apiece while skipper Mashrafe Mortaza took one wicket. Mustafizur Rahman was
given man of the match award for his performance.
Winning
the toss, Bangladesh elected to bat first and scored 307 runs losing all
wickets. It was their highest team total against India in ODIs. Opening pair Tamim
Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar made a rapid hundred run partnership. Both of them
scored half-centuries. Shakib Al Hasan’s 52 and Sabbir Rahman’s 41 also played
a very important role in taking the score to 300 plus. It could be more if they
could stay on the crease a few more time.
With
this victory, Bangladesh cricket team has moved forward to secure their place
in the 2017 Champions Trophy which will be contested by top-eight-ranked ODI
teams as of 30 September 2015. Now, they will have to win one more ODI match
out of their next five ODIs to cement their spot.
After
coming to chase, Indian opening pair made off to a good start. However, India’s
misfortune started with the departure of Shikhar Dhawan. The touring team were
bowled out for 228.
Second
ODI match between Bangladesh and India will be played on June 21 at the same
venue.
