The Sri Lankan fast bowler, Lasith Malinga, was named
as the event ambassador by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday for
the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup 2012 that is scheduled to be held at the end of
this year.
Being the face
of the World Twenty20 advertising campaign in the host nation, he will promote the
event globally.
It is expected that the right-arm fast bowler will play
an important role to lead his nation in the 12-team cricket tournament that
will kick off on September 18. He expressed his happiness after being honored
to play a part in the first World Twenty20 World Cup hosted by an Asian
country. He also thanked the ICC for giving Sri Lanka the opportunity to host
an event.
The 28-year-old Malinga took retirement from Test
cricket to extend his limited-overs career. He is the only bowler who has
claimed four wickets in four successive deliveries against South Africa in 2007
ICC World Cup. He has also achieved the rare feat of claiming three hat-tricks
in ODI format of cricket game.
Playing 30 Test matches, he took 101 wickets. On the
other hand, he has so far claimed 186 wickets in 118 ODIs.
England is the defending champion. They will try to defend
their title at the fourth edition of the Twenty20 World Cup.
