Dhobi Ghat Review: Kiran Rao’s first directorial movie

The much anticipated Hindi film Dhobi Ghat has been released worldwide on 21st January 2011. Dhobi Ghat is the first directorial film by Kiran Rao and she has produced the film along with his husband, Aamir Khan.

The film has been inspired by Dhobi Ghat, which is a well-known place in India. The film is internationally known as Mumbai Diaries.

It seems that director Kiran Rao has taken a big challenge by not making commercial film in her directorial debut. Even she didn’t include any item number for the success. Except Aamir Khan, other three main characters are new.

Dhobi Ghat features Aamir Khan, Prateik Babbar, Monica Dogra and Kriti Malhotra in the lead roles. Except Aamir Khan, three other stars are fresh faces in this film. However, Prateik Babbar made his debut in Bollywood with Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na film. He was one of the supporting roles in this film. But, now he will be seen performing one of the male lead roles in his newly released film Dhobi Ghat.

For both Monica Dogra and Kriti Malhotra, it is going to be a totally different thing. With making her appearance in this film, Monica Dogra has turned herself as an actress from singer. Film industry is not an unknown place for Kriti Malhotra. Though it is her debut film as an actress, she has already worked in many films as assistant dress designer.

The film tells the story of these four characters from different classes of society. Aamir Khan plays the role of a lonely artist while Prateik Babbar’s character is a washer boy. Singer-turned-actress Monica Dogra will be seen performing the role of an Indian-American banker and Kriti Malhotra will play the role of a 22-year-old married female named Yasmin. The lives of these four characters have been talked in the whole film.

Dhobi Ghat is not a three hours long movie. The length of this film is just one and a half hour with no interval in between. So, it is thought that fans will not be feeling bored.

Before the release of this film, it has got critical praise at the London Film Festival 2010 and the Toronto Film Festival 2010.

In Dhobi Ghat, there will be only three songs titled "Stranger Lives", "You With Me" and "Ghat Kaisi". "Stranger Lives" was performed by Gustavo Santaolalla while Ryuichi Sakamoto sang the song "You With Me". Monica Dogra and Gustavo Santaolalla sang the song "Ghat Kaisi". This 3:12 minute song was composed by Gustavo Santaolalla and Aamir Khan.
