Indian selectors have picked a 30-man provisional squad for the upcoming 2011 ICC World Cup. Looking at the preliminary squad, what comes first to the mind of cricket fans is that selectors were not interested in doing any kind of experience with the squad as there were no real surprises. However, it will be trimmed to 15 players by January 19.
In the preliminary World Cup squad, Mumbai middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane is the only one uncapped player has been picked.
Cheteshwar Pujara is a promising young star who has been picked in the temporary squad. He impressed the selectors scoring a half century in his Test debut against Australia.
The exclusion of Indian all rounder, Irfan Pathan, was the noteworthy news. May be, his injury forced the selectors of not selecting him in the squad. He could not take part in the Indian domestic season due to his injury.
Being one of the most experienced batsmen, Rahul Dravid failed to make his place even in the list of 30.
Batting is always the strength of Indian cricket team. It is said that Indian cricket team will not have the shortage of quality batsmen. Preliminary squad includes 12 batsmen. However, it will probably be cut down to half and they will be chosen based on their experience and performance.
Including Indian skipper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, four wicketkeepers have been picked in the preliminary squad. They are- Parthiv Patel, Wriddhiman Saha and Dinesh Karthik. Among them only two will be selected when the squad will be shortened for the final selection. It is thought that Parthiv Patel will be Dhoni's deputy.
What makes me surprise is that only two allrounders have been selected in the preliminary squad. They are- Ravindra Jadeja, Yusuf Pathan. However, Yusuf Pathan has the highest possibility to get his call in the main squad. His belligerent century against New Zealand New Zealand would make him the firm favorite to make the World Cup squad.
Spin is strength of Indian cricket team. Indian cricket team has some good spinners who can change the game any time in any situation. Five specialist spinners have been picked in the bowling department. But only two will be able to play in the main squad. Obviously, Harbhajan Singh will be in the main Indian squad. So, there will be a tough competition for other four spinners to make into the World Cup squad. It may be R Ashwin.
There will be seven pace bowlers in the squad. Among them only 4-5 could be picked for the world cup. It is not yet sure which four bowlers will be included in the main squad.
