Toyota recalls 90,000 Highlander and Highlander hybrid SUVs

Because of problem in the locking system of child safety seats, Toyota Motor Corporation (TYO:7203)has recalled its 90,000 Highlander and Highlander hybrid Sports utility vehicle. According to Toyota’s spokesman, Bill Kwong, the problem was discovered by National Highway Traffic Safety Authority (NHTSA) while testing the child safety seat but there was no accident or injury. Reuters reports:

The locking mechanism on the seat belts apparently cannot secure properly when certain rear-facing child safety seats are used, which could cause the child seats to move, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported on Friday.

"As such, this could discourage the use of a child restraint and in the event of a crash, the child may not be adequately protected, possibly resulting in injury," the NHTSA said in a statement on its Web site, http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov.

Toyota will send letters to the car owners by early June and replace the components for free.
