Companies are competing to make the thinnest smartphone

It looks like that Chinese smartphone makers are getting into the competition of making the slimmest smartphones. With 5.31mm thickness, Gionee Elife S5.1 was the first slimmest device being approved by Guinness. At that time, it was over a millimeter slimmer than the iPhone 6 and Galaxy Alpha.
However, this model could not hold this record for a long time as it was dethroned by the Oppo R5 handset in October 2014. It was only 4.85mm thick. It also held the record for a short while. Then Vivo released its X5 Max in the market which is 4.75mm thick. It has been listed as the second thinnest smartphone after Coolpad’s Ivvi K1 Mini which is just 4.7mm thick. Till now it is the thinnest smartphone in the world.

It is also reported that Gionee will launch a new handset at MWC in Barcelona next month. This new device is dubbed as Elife S7 and going by how Gionee named its previous two models, it will be around 7mm thin, though many people are thinking that it will be the slimmest phone overtaking Coolpad’s Ivvi K1 Mini.
