According to the latest research from Strategy
Analytics, in the first quarter of this year, tablet PCs were shipped 40.6
million worldwide which sets a new record. The number of tablets shipped in Q1
was more than double the 18.7 million that were sold in the same quarter a year
ago. This is the highest year-over-year growth rate ever seen in a
January-to-March period.
Apple’s iPad is still leading
the tablet PC market with 48% global market share. However, their dominance in
this fast growing competitive market is decreasing. They are now facing
challenge from different companies. In the same period of last year their
market share was 63%.
Google’s Android-based tablet PCs were shipped 17.6
million which held 43% global market share based on operating system (OS)
market share in the first quarter of 2013. Last year, it had 34% share of the
market. This operating system is doing well and shipments of the Android-based
tablet PCs have been growing strongly.
Microsoft’s Windows 8 is another tablet PC operating
system which is coming strongly in the competition from zero share in 2012. Microsoft’s
Windows 8 operating system including Windows RT secured a 7.5% share of the
global market selling 3 million units. They are hoping to increase their share
in the in the global tablet PC market.
