The inaugural season of the Sri Lankan Premier League (SLPL)
is at the center of media attention. It has been making many questions in the
media. Not only that but also it has given birth to a rumor regarding the
ownership of the franchises. The rumor
says that all franchises in this tournament have been sponsored by Indian
companies. However, this claim has been denied by Sandeep Bhammer, the CEO of Somerset
Entertainment Ventures (SEV).
Bhammer said, “That's not true. In fact one of the
companies is called Varun Beverages Lanka Private Limited which is a Sri Lankan
company and also there is another which is based out of Hong Kong whose
founders have varied interest in different industries.”
However, the rumor is not completely false at all because
out of seven franchises, five have been bought by Indian companies. The Sri
Lanka Cricket board has refused to declare the name of the owners of the seven
franchises.
The Somerset Entertainment Ventures (SEV) has got the overall
sponsorship rights to partner in Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in the in the Sri
Lankan Premier League (SLPL).
