Sri Lanka announces 16-man Test squad against Pakistan

Ahead of the three-match Test series against Pakistan in UAE, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board announced a 16-man squad. This tour series will start from October 18, 2011. Tillakaratne Dilshan will lead his team in the tour series while Angelo Mathews will be his deputy.

The most notable thing in this squad is that four wicketkeeper-batsman have been included in this list. They are Kumar Sangakkara, Prasanna Jayawardene, Dinesh Chandimal and Kaushal Silva. So, there will be stiff competition for this post.

Dinesh Chandimal and Kaushal Silva are two uncapped players in the Test squad. The 21-year-old player has made his debut in both ODI and T20 cricket format, but has not played any single Test yet. He has so far played 12 ODIs and seven Twenty20 international matches. He was part of the Ruhuna club in the qualifying round of the Champions League Twenty20 in India. On the other hand, Kaushal Silva has no experience playing in the national squad.

Another uncapped player is fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep. Both Nuwan Pradeep and Kaushal Silva were part of the Test squad.

However, the exclusion of middle-order batsman Thilan Samaraweera and spinner Ajantha Mendis has disappointed the fans.

Samaraweera had poor performance against Australia in the home series. Playing two tests, he scored just 86 runs at an average of 21.50.

Ajantha Mendis has not recovered from his back injury that he sustained during the preceding ODI series.

Five fast bowlers Chanaka Welegedara, Suranga Lakmal, Dammika Prasad, Shaminda Eranga and Pradeep and two spinners Rangana Herath and Suraj Randiv have been included in the squad.
