Happy Mahashivratri 2011: SMS and other information

Today, the Hindu community is observing the Mahashivratri (Great Night of Shiva) on March 2 and 3. It is celebrated every year on the 13th night /14th day in the Krishna Paksha. Hindu people all over India and Nepal celebrate Mahashivratri.

Shiva is a major Hindu deity and a powerful god. Among the Hindus Shiva is seen as the Supreme God. On this days, devotees offer bael leaves to the lord and fast all day and night and pour milk, Ganga water, bael leaves, cannabies (Bhaang) on the Shivalingam in the temples. It is believed that Lord Shiva does not disappoint anyone who prays to him.

On this holy occasion Sri Lankan army freed 115 rehabilitated LTTE cadres. Brigadier Sudantha Ranasinghe, Commissioner General of Rehabilitation informed that the cadres had been released at a function held at Vavuniya Cultural Center. At the function, people who successfully completed the pre-school teacher training programme at Vavuniya, Poonthoddam rehabilitation centre, received certificates.

An art competition was also arranged where the ex-LTTE combatants participated.
